On September 27th, 2011, Auris Apothecary released the first batch of the Locked Groove Lathe Plate Series, ten releases from artists around the world that each feature nine hand-cut locked grooves on a one-sided plastic plate. My entry, Circular Living, can be seen above. It features a wide spectrum of listening possibilities that could either be considered my longest or shortest release yet. It all depends on the listener. A very limited number of copies are still available at the Pharmacy on Auris Apothecary’s website. You can also contact me directly because I have about a half dozen copies. The other participants for this batch of the Locked Groove Lathe Plate Series were Deserter, Sitar Outreach Ministry, Pusdrainer, Hail Architeuthis!, Dante Augustus Scarlatti, Simalanceata, Pendra Gon, Torture Corpse, and Drekka. A few short excerpts can be heard on bandcamp.

To commemorate the occasion, Auris Apothecary hosted BLACK MASS XVIII at the Sound Workshop on September 26th, 2011. This release show featured four of the local participants in the series and Joey Molinaro, who had a tape released by the label on Halloween of this year. The night featured unique visuals created by Dante Augustus Scarlatti and an interactive listening exhibit with some turntables so audience members could hear multiple releases at the same time. I’m very pleased to announce that most of the night was successfully documented by Dante Augustus Scarlatti. You can view my whole performance below, and check out the related videos for footage from the other performers.

Also, since this summer, I’ve been playing keys in a messed up, sleazy listening rock band called Dracula Pills featuring members past and present of bands like Kam Kama, NOON, Jerome & the Psychics, Circuit des Yeux, (D)(B)(H), and others. It’s been a lot of fun. You can hear a live recording from November on bandcamp.

Finally, the other pages should all be updated very soon. I’ll be playing two more solo shows before the end of the year, one in Bloomington this Thursday at The Ream and one in Indianapolis on the 23rd at the Melody Inn, so keep your eyes peeled for those.

I am pleased to announce that “Volume 2″ of Flannelly Vs. Funkhouser is now available for streaming on the RELEASES page. The release show at the Ream was a great success, and an edited video of the performance will soon be available via Dante Augustus Scarlatti.

“Spaced” now available for purchase & download.

On August 27th, Auris Apothecary released Spaced!

AAX-040 - John Flannelly : Spaced

From their site: ” Proving the power of modern audio programs as tools for composition, “non-musician” John Flannelly channels the spirits of retro space-travel without ever picking up an instrument, save for a simple synthesizer on select passages. Created almost entirely with the free program Audacity, Spaced presents sounds alien yet familiar, retro yet full-frequency, obnoxious but curiously intriguing. While coming off as seemingly schizophrenic at times, the songs bounce back and forth between explorations of planetary surfaces and a lone spacemans thoughts seamlessly, weaving a unique journey into the lo-fidelity of outer space.”
